Our

World Oceans Day Competition and Exhibition

14 July 2021

The 8th June 2021 was World Ocean’s Day. To promote and celebrate this the Renewi Education team collaborated with Engie catering services and ran a competition for all primary education providers in the Wakefield district. Schools were asked to design and make a sea creature from plastic waste to be displayed in the Ridings shopping centre in Wakefield.

There were 5 entries in total, 4 from Netherton Junior and Infant School and 1 from Hendal KS2 PRU.

These entries made up an exhibit for public viewing in the Ridings from 5th to the 14th July, encouraging people to think about the effect of their actions and pollution on the environment, especially the oceans.

Photos of the entries were shared on the RecycleforWakefield Facebook page and the public were asked to vote for their favourite.

The winning entry was Sandy the Starfish, created by Key Stage 1 at Netherton Junior and Infants school with 213 votes. Students from KS1 were presented with a certificate for the school by representatives from Wakefield Council, Renewi and Engie. All students that took part also received some recycling themed goodies from Renewi.

The winners will also have an all-expenses paid trip to the Renewi education centre next term to learn more about rubbish, recycling and the environment.
