About Us

About Biffa: Changing the way people think about waste

Biffa is the UK’s leading sustainable waste management company. We have been at the forefront of the waste industry for over a century and are committed to changing the way people think about waste. We see waste as a valuable resource that can be reused, recycled, and recovered, not as something to be thrown away. We help our customers to waste less and do more, while reducing their environmental impact and creating value from waste.

What we do

We offer a range of services to help businesses, local authorities, and other organisations participate in the circular economy, which aims to keep materials in use for as long as possible and minimise waste.

  • Reduce: a unique, industry solution for surplus – preventing food and household products from going to waste
  • Collect: the largest, most efficient, lowest carbon collections service in the UK
  • Recycle: the UK’s leading closed-loop packaging recycler
  • Recover: a key investor in essential, secure, low-carbon energy from waste

Why we do it

We do it because we want a clean and sustainable future for communities around the UK. By enabling the UK circular economy and reducing waste we can help bring about environmental, social, and economic benefits for everyone. By leading the way in sustainable waste management, we can:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change
  • Conserve natural resources and protect biodiversity
  • Support innovation and create new markets and jobs
  • Improve community and public health and well-being

"We do it because we care about our customers, our communities, and our planet. We want to make a positive difference to the world we live in."

Our sustainability strategy: Resourceful, Responsible

We are aiming for a zero-waste society, where resources are used efficiently and effectively, and waste is minimised or eliminated. We also want a net zero carbon future, where greenhouse gas emissions are reduced to the lowest possible level. To achieve these goals, we launched our sustainability strategy in 2020, called Resourceful, Responsible, which is based on four pillars:

  • Building a circular economy: We will increase our recycling rate to 75% and our diversion rate to 90% by 2030
  • Tackling climate change: We will reduce our carbon intensity by 50% and achieve net zero emissions by 2030
  • Caring for our people: We will enhance our employee engagement, diversity, and well-being, and reduce our accident frequency rate by 50% by 2030
  • Supporting our communities: We will invest £25 million in social and environmental projects, and create 500 new jobs for marginalised people by 2030
